History
The Garden Hills neighborhood development corporation was established in 1925 by the prominent Atlanta lawyer, Phillips Campbell McDuffie. McDuffie incorporated Garden Hills and advertised the area to potential buyers as “Beautiful Garden Hills”. He envisioned a country club community with a pool and a recreation center at its heart.
The neighborhood was planned in three phases: the country club section; the Peachtree section; and the Brentwood section. As more homes were built and more families moved into the neighborhood, a social network of women recognized the need to form a neighborhood entity whose goals were simple: to beautify and improve civic and community interests. In 1927, this group established the neighborhood’s first neighborhood organization: The Garden Hills Women’s Club.
In the early 1970s, the Women’s Club incorporated and formally changed its name to the Garden Hills Garden Club. Still operating as a social and service organization, the goals of the club are to help make Garden Hills a safe, unique, and beautiful place to call home.
Some of the offerings sponsored by the GHGC include the annual Ice Cream Social, wine tastings, the Holiday Mailbox decorating fundraiser, and a variety of programs and social events throughout the year. The club maintains several community green spaces in the neighborhood.
